Make fitness a family affair!
Participating in activities as a family is not only good for our bodies but also for our minds.
Spending time with people who love us has a positive impact on our mental health. And playing sports or spending time with family helps to build trust, improve communication and strengthen the bonds between family members.
Family activities also helps to fight childhood obesity.
Childhood obesity can be caused by an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle or genetics. Either way, it can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Low self-esteem, anxiety and depression can also be a result of childhood obesity. Encouraging your child to be more active can help create lifelong healthy habits.
Exercising as a family strengthens the communication and teamwork. You’ll also learn to get to know your child better. Spending this time together also allows you to encourage good behaviour or address bad habits, like being a sore loser.
Here are five fun and free ways to make fitness a family affair:
#1 Lip Sync Hero
Each family member dresses up and performs a song of their choice while the rest cheer them on. Serve healthy snacks and get plenty of dancing in.
#2 Walk It Out
Take the whole family outdoors and go for a walk around the block or to your favourite hang out spot.
#3 Play Tag
You’re it! Find a spot outdoors with plenty of space to play this oldie-but-goodie.
#4 Dance Party
Turn on your favorite music and have a family dance party. Make sure everyone gets to put in their request!
#5 Friendly Competition
Pick a sport, card or board game and challenge each other. Add a wager of chores or housework.
