Additionally, it is being diagnosed at younger ages in The Bahamas as compared to the United States or other parts of the world. Roughly 48% of the women diagnosed with breast cancer in The Bahamas are under the age of 50. The average age of diagnosis in The Bahamas is 42, as compared to 62 in the United States.

Dr. Friend is the lead physician at Family Medicine Center Rock Sound, Eleuthera. She was born in Nassau and spent her first years growing up in Wemyss Bight, Eleuthera. She then moved with her parents to Freeport where she completed her primary and high school education. A strong advocate for breast cancer awareness, Dr. Friend has spoken extensively on the importance of self-examinations as well as on the benefits of 3D mammography vs regular exams.
