Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland just below the center of your throat at the base of your neck. It’s part of the endocrine system – an intricate network of glands responsible for manufacturing hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism.

Several problems can arise when your thyroid produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Some of the most common thyroid-related conditions include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, goiter, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer.

Endocrinologist Dr. Kristine Parker-Curling delves into what these conditions are, why they happen and what you can do.
