On September 28, I had the immense honor of representing Family Medicine Center at the Bahamas Alzheimers Association Health Expo which immediately followed the #memorywalk.
It was truly heartwarming to be part of an initiative so close to my heart, giving back to our community in a way that could make a real difference. Alzheimer’s is a journey no one should walk alone, and it meant so much to stand alongside caregivers, sponsors, and fellow healthcare professionals as we provided not just information but hope.We shared crucial insights on Alzheimer’s disease—offering attendees a deeper understanding of the screening modalities we use, from memory tests to advanced imaging tools like CT and MRI.
But what makes me most proud is the holistic, 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜. We’re not just treating symptoms; we’re treating lives.
Our approach is personalized and comprehensive:
1. The lifestyle arm, led by our phenomenal 𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 Rebecca Strachan, guides patients on healthier living to support cognitive function.
2. Our 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲 team ensures access to medications that tackle risk factors and help manage symptoms, always ready to answer questions.
3. 𝐂𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, which starts in our office, but continues in the comfort of each patient’s home to maximize recovery and independence.
4. And finally, we stand with the caregivers, offering the 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 they deserve, because their well-being is just as critical as the patients’.
Our geriatric team, including Nurse McIntosh and Medical Assistant Ferguson, also provided blood pressure checks and answered countless questions. The energy at the expo was filled with compassion, knowledge, and an undeniable drive to improve the lives of those affected by Alzheimer’s.
I’m grateful to have been part of such an inspiring day, and it renews my commitment to this vital work.
